About Madison

This city has won numerous awards and accolades for things such as being the Nation’s smartest city, its bike-friendliness, and cuisine, even for its teeth! Madison, Wisconsin, state capitol and all around over-achiever, has so much to offer. Madison offers a huge variety of attractions, with something to please everyone.

The domed capitol building is not only the heart of state government, but also the heart of the city. Built in the magnificent neo-classical style of the U.S. Capitol Building, the capitol boasts the only granite dome in the United States. The gilded statue of Wisconsin, who crowns the building, embodies the State Motto of “Forward!” with her outstretched arm and swirling garments. A free tour is a great way to experience the art and history of the building.

Madison is centered around two lakes, Lake Monona and Lake Mendota. Not only do these beautiful bodies of water add to the aesthetic appeal of the city, they are an aquatic playground. On a beautiful day, the lakes seem to be filled with boaters, water-skiers, jet-skiers, swimmers, and windsurfers. Often making the top ten in many rankings of the “healthiest” cities, Madison is extremely fitness friendly. Many streets have bike lanes, and paved bike trails criss-cross the city and circle the lakes.

Home of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the capitol has a large student population. The campus is sprawling, historic, and beautiful, with both ultra-modern and classical facilities. The universities sports team, the Badgers, compete at a high level in basketball and football. The football team plays at the open-air Camp Randall stadium, and attending a game is truly an experience. The presence of students ensures a vivid nightlife and bar scene. The campus is known for its liberal tendencies.

One of the great attractions of downtown Madison is State Street. This thoroughfare is closed to all traffic except buses and cyclists. Pedestrians throng the streets, especially during the summer. Quirky theaters, exotic restaurants, funky consignment shops, and utterly chic boutiques jostle for space next to that campus-town institution, the new and used bookstore.

Despite the preponderance of pubs and bars, Madison actually has quite a lot to offer in fine and ethnic dining. The city boasts a huge variety of ethnic cuisine, from Thai and Chinese to Nepalese and Indian. Many downtown restaurants offer upscale dining—one on the roof of a modern art museum!

Madison is truly a city that takes pleasure in life.
